What Position Will the 49ers Draft in Round 1?

If they choose an offensive tackle in the first round, I’d be stunned. Which is unfortunate because there is an excellent class of offensive tackles this year.

The majority of observers anticipated that the 49ers would use their first-round selection on an offensive lineman this season until they decided to extend the contract of Colton McKivitz.

It appears that McKivitz will be the starting right tackle for the 49ers through 2025. With choice number 31, they could certainly select another offensive tackle and bench him for a few years, but the 49ers need starters at other positions more. Therefore, if they accept an offensive tackle in Round 1, I’d be stunned. Which is unfortunate because there is a great class of offensive tackles this year, and the 49ers very well may select a player higher up than McKivitz in the draft.

However, the 49ers will require a three-down starter at that position immediately unless they sign an edge rusher during free agency. It appears that the 49ers will select a defensive end in the first round of the draft.

Despite being an offensive coach, Kyle Shanahan bases his team’s strategy on defence. Because of this, he held the defence accountable for the Super Bowl loss rather than the offence, despite the fact that the defence only allowed the Chiefs to score 25 points while the offence only managed to score 22. The bar is set much higher for the defence.

It’s practically a given that the 49ers will choose an edge rusher in Round 1 if they don’t already have one.

However, suppose the 49ers acquire Josh Sweat or Haason Reddick through trade. If so, they wouldn’t select a defensive end in the first round of the draft. Alternatively, they may select a right guard. On the offensive line, that is the one position that is up for debate. Furthermore, since Round 1 effectively marks the start of Round 2, it is not absurd to draft a guard at that point.

Nevertheless, it would be good if the 49ers, for once, selected an offensive lineman in the draft.
