‘Very little’: Phil Smith’s Sunderland player ratings following the Southampton loss – one 7 and two 4s.

Sunderland were defeated 4-2 by Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. How did each player perform for Mike Dodds’ side?

The Black Cats trailed 2-0 in the first half due to Stuart Armstrong’s goal and Adam Armstrong’s penalty. Sunderland did, however, draw level after the break, with to goals from Romaine Mundle and Jobe Bellingham in a nine-minute stretch.

Unlucky that another good save led to an opposition goal after Armstrong followed up Bednarek’s header that he’d done well to stop. Nothing he could really do about any of the other goals and almost got a hand to Armstrong’s penalty. 5

Southampton, however, won thanks to two close-range goals from replacement Joe Rothwell. Here’s how Phil Smith assessed Sunderland players at St Mary’s Stadium:

Unfortunately, another superb save resulted in an opponent score as Armstrong followed up on Bednarek’s header, which he had done well to save. He had nothing to do with any of the other goals and came close to assisting Armstrong’s penalty kick.

Southampton’s lead could have been bigger if not for his pace and powers of recovery at times in the first half. Went off in second half with an injury, with Sunderland looking very disjointed and conceded twice in the aftermath. 6

Similar performance to the Leicester game in that he showed some promise at times when stepping into midfield, nicking the ball and playing some decent passes. Also looked a little uncertain defensively. 5

4. Jenson Seelt – 5

Similar to his performance against Leicester, he showed some potential when he stepped into midfield, nicking the ball and making some good passes. In addition, he appeared unsure on defense. 5Photo: Frank Reid.
