“It is a bit weird” – Claim dropped on Dion Charles situation at Huddersfield Town
Our Huddersfield Town fan analyst has urged other fans to continue supporting January’s acquisition of Dion
Charles, claiming that the £750,000 player hasn’t scored for the Terriers primarily due to the lack of creativity from
Michael Duff’s creative players.
Over the past month, it has been fairly obvious that Michael Duff has made increasing firepower in the final third a
primary goal. Now that the winter transfer window is closed, he will be confidence in his present strikers’ ability to
help the Terriers earn an instant promotion back to the Championship.
The first striker to sign a contract at John Smith’s Stadium was Joe Taylor, who arrived from Luton Town in
January. Charles, a forward for Bolton Wanderers, signed a two-and-a-half-year contract for a reported £750,000.
Although he has been a great striker in the third division for several years with the Trotters and Accrington Stanley,
Charles has yet to score for his new team despite playing more than 300 minutes and making four starts for the
Terriers.
Fan pundit offers positive Dion Charles verdict despite tough start
On January 15, Charles became a member of Town. Three days later, he started in a 2-2 draw away at Blackpool,
where striking partner Taylor scored his first goal in blue and white.
He then made his home debut against his old team, Bolton, at John Smith’s Stadium, but he was unable to prevent
the visitors from winning 1-0. Since then, he has started up front in defeats to Northampton Town and Birmingham
City, although he has yet to contribute a goal.
Our Terriers fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, has praised Charles’ determination to score goals and fashion chances of
his own in his first four games as a Huddersfield player, and believes the reason behind his slow start is down to his
teammates’ lack of creativity and poor efforts at chance creation.
Grege said FLW, “Dion Charles has put in a lot of work, but we haven’t really created anything for him in terms of
chances.”
“Any opportunities he has had have been byproducts of his own creation.
“I admire his mentality and his hunger, but it seems like we’ve nearly forgotten how to generate opportunities
because we didn’t have many good striking options before to his arrival.
We were saying that we kept hitting balls into nice places with no one on the end of them before we signed Charles
and Joe Taylor, so it’s a little strange.
The balls aren’t going into those locations now that they’re there.
Charles should come good for the Terriers given his impressive League One record
Charles, who was born in Preston, started his professional career with Blackpool but was unable to make an
impression on their team. He then moved to AFC Fylde, a non-league team, before joining Fleetwood Town in 2016.
Two years later, he returned to non-league football with Southport.
After an outstanding stint in the National League North, Accrington Stanley brought him back to League One in early
2019. He immediately became popular at Wham Stadium and scored 19 goals in 42 third-tier games during the
2020–21 season.
The 27-time Northern Ireland international quickly went from Stanley to Bolton in 2022 for an estimated £320,000,
and at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, he has established himself as one of the third division’s most prolific
scorers in recent years.
In his first full season with the Trotters, he scored 21 goals in 52 games. Last season, he scored 20 goals in 44 games
as Bolton fell to Oxford United in the play-off final and missed promotion in third place.
Charles, 29, is obviously still capable of being a force in League One after recording seven goals and three assists in
15 starts this season under Ian Evatt. He just needs to score his first Terriers goal to boost his confidence before he
can start to help the team win promotion in the coming months.

Having said that, he must quickly get up and running in blue and white under Michael Duff because the manager has
few options up front besides him and former Luton player Taylor, with players like Bojan Radulovic, Freddie Ladapo,
Rhys Healey, and Danny Ward all struggling mightily in front of goal this season.
