‘I hope not’ : Shay Given drops Rangers & Celtic title verdict

Shay Given has delivered an “exciting” verdict on the Scottish Premiership title race between Rangers and Celtic, with the Old Firm rivals separated by two points.

On Saturday, March 2, the Hoops lost 2-0 to Hearts at Tynecastle Park after the Gers made a mistake that resulted in a 2-1 loss to Motherwell.

Rangers has only won one Scottish Premiership in the past ten years, defeating Celtic to win it in the 2020–21 season. The Gers’ last league championship was in 2011.

Given said via BBC Sport on Saturday, March 9, in response to Alex Scott’s question on whether Rangers could win the league: “I hope not.” Fans of the Rangers are now yelling at the TV. From an impartial stance, it’s thrilling once more—there’s a true race for the championship since Celtic has been playing so well these past several years.

They have only yet to play one another twice. It’s going to down to the wire and is rather close. Brendan [Rodgers] has to turn that deficit around, I hope.

With a potential Europa League championship this season, Philippe Clement will be busy, especially with the second leg against Benfica coming up soon.

With two derbies remaining, Rangers’ Old Firm opponents are the only team likely to stand in their way of winning the league title.

To Celtic’s dismay, the Gers could end the season with three trophies at Ibrox after winning the Scottish League Cup with a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen in the final.

All of this can be attributed to Clement’s flawless work at the club since taking over for Michael Beale after his departure in October.

The momentum is now strongly in Rangers’ favor as a result of the turn of events, which might be crucial in the last stretch of the season.
