Benfica fans issued Rangers trip warning after UEFA threat following Toulouse trouble
Benfica, Rangers’ Europa League rivals, have received a warning from their own club executives that if their supporters don’t behave well at Ibrox this week, UEFA would bar them from attending their next away game in Europe.
After returning to Scotland with a 2-2 draw from the first leg in Lisbon, Rangers take on the Portuguese behemoths in Glasgow for the second leg of the Round of 16. However, UEFA just crushed Benfica by fining them £24,000 and prohibiting them from having any fans at away games for a two-year period after their supporters caused disruption during their most recent Europa League match in Toulouse. Furthermore, Benfica has done the extraordinary thing of alerting their own fans.
They stated: “We have been sanctioned by UEFA with a ban on the sale of tickets to its fans for the next European match to be held away from home, with the penalty suspended for a period of two years. UEFA’s decision is based on the setting off of flares and the throwing of objects during the recent Europa League match in Toulouse. The decision also implies the immediate payment of a fine of 28,000 euros.
“Benfica reiterates its call to its supporters to abide by the rules and abstain from actions that harm the club’s reputation and deprive the team of support that has always been essential and crucial for our players in light of UEFA’s ruling. This is just another obvious call to all supporters: back the group, stand up for the organization.”
