‘No one is’: Djed Spence reacts when asked about Evangelos Marinakis’s big decision

Djed Spence did not always have the best of times at Middlesbrough, he has failed to make an impact at Tottenham Hotspur and could not do much of note at Leeds United, but he was a big success at Nottingham Forest.

Spence is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Genoa. The Italian club acquired the right-back during the January transfer window. In the summer of 2023, the Serie A team will have the opportunity to finalize the agreement.

Djed Spence spent the first part of the season on loan with Leeds United. The Championship team used a break clause to send the right-back back to Spurs, even though it was anticipated that he would remain at Elland Road until the conclusion of the season.

The young player has now acknowledged that his time at Nottingham Forest was his best period of play thus far in his career. The former England Under-21 player has mentioned how Steve Cooper, the Forest manager at the time, brought out the best in him.

The defender also shared his thoughts on Forest owner Evangelo Marinakis’s choice to remove Cooper from his position as manager in December and appoint Nuno, a former manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, in his place.

Cooper’s midseason dismissal was a significant move, particularly considering that he had maintained Forest in the Premier League the previous year.

Cooper was fired as Forest was sitting 17th in the Premier League standings, five points clear of Luton Town, who were in third place with a game remaining.

Right present, Forest is ranked 17th in the league. With a game remaining, Luton, who are in 18th place, are four points behind them.

“Steve Cooper is a good man; he understands people,” Spence stated to The Athletic. He is an excellent coach, and it was crucial that he understand me both as a player and as a person.

It was greatly aided by his experience working with England Youth, where he interacted with players of various ages and backgrounds and learned how to manage them. He just let me be who I am.

Cooper will instill confidence in you by asking you questions and speaking to you in a conversational manner; these traits are important in football. We don’t just show up for work, click a button, and go about our lives as usual. Being human, we enjoy interacting with others and speaking.

Regarding his tenure at Forest, the right-back continued, “It was me at my best, enjoying football and loving the game.” It was a great experience and one of the best moments of my career.

Spence responded, “No,” when asked if the decision made by Forest to fire Cooper in December shocked him. In football, these things occur. Everyone can get fired because this is football. He performed admirably for the team and helped us qualify for the Premier League.

Djed Spence was a star at Nottingham Forest

During the 2021–22 campaign, Djed Spence was among Nottingham Forest’s finest players. He was instrumental in the Reds’ promotion from the Championship to the Premier League while he was on loan from Middlesbrough.

During that season, Spence played in 41 starts and one substitute appearance for Forest in the Championship. In those games, he provided four assists in addition to his two goals.

You have to wonder what may have happened if that loan agreement had been extended permanently in the summer of 2022 by Forest, Middlesbrough, and Spence.
