A classic coastal chippy is now competing against it.

A chippy from Nottingham has been listed among the top 20 fish and chip stores in the United Kingdom.

The Cod’s Scallops are now vying for the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, which is the national fish and chip

awards’ premier category and the UK industry’s top honour.

In order to advance to the next round, the Wollaton chip business on Bramcote Lane must defeat a classic coastal

chippy that has been owned and operated by the same family for nine decades.

It will be scored against French’s Fish and Chips at Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk in a knockout match akin to the FA

Cup.

“It’s a great shop, you couldn’t get a more seaside fish and chip shop, while we’re in landlocked Nottingham,” stated

John Molnar, owner of Cod’s Scallops. We’re hoping to place in the top ten. I’m crossing my fingers.

It’s the most recent accolade for the chippy, which made it into the top 10 of Fry Magazine’s greatest eateries in 2017

and was a finalist in the 2018 awards.

The Mansfield Road location of Cod’s Scallops in Carrington is awaiting word on whether it has placed in the top 20

of the competition’s restaurant of the year category.

Seafish awards honour exceptional companies nationwide that have gone above and beyond in producing “incredible

fish and chips and providing excellent customer service.”

But it’s not just about food quality. Chippies are also judged on sustainability of key ingredients, staff training and

career opportunities for young people, and innovative menu options for customers with allergies and dietary

requirements.

The chip shops are put through their paces as part of a rigorous judging process. They have already had a visit from

a mystery judge. The next stage is a full performance audit at the premises.

Seafish CEO Marcus Coleman stated: “The healthiest of the traditional takeaways is fish and chips, and we’re happy

to say that the quality on offer across the UK is just as healthy, if not more so, than when we launched these awards

32 years ago.” All of these companies should be celebrating today because it’s difficult to make it into the Top 20.

“It is truly an accomplishment to have made it this far because our judges examine every facet of operating a fish and

chip business.”

On January 23, 2020, the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award winner will be revealed during a ceremony in

London.
