Bobby Madden reacts to controversial incident in Rangers v Benfica on Instagram

Bobby Madden has given his assessment of the most contentious moment from Rangers’ 2-2 Europa League draw against Benfica on Thursday, March 7.

After a protracted VAR examination, the Portuguese powerhouses were given a penalty against John Souttar, who was found to have handled the ball within the penalty area.

The early Tom Lawrence opening was cancelled out by Angel Di Maria’s spot-kick, setting up a thrilling encounter in Lisbon before the second leg at Ibrox.

The former FIFA referee posted the following on his own Instagram account on Friday, March 8: “The first footage shows the defender playing the ball onto their own arm. There should be no penalties for this.

Will Rangers be able to defeat Benfica in the rematch?

Philippe Clement should be really confident that his team can win and advance farther in the European competition with the support of the Ibrox crowd.

Nevertheless, none of this changes the reality that Benfica received an extremely controversial penalty that was administered improperly.

Although the match had a great start, Souttar was particularly hard done by against Benfica, and his confidence suffered once the penalty was awarded.

Just before the halftime siren went out, Dujon Sterling gave the team a boost of confidence by giving Rangers the lead again. However, an own goal by Connor Goldson proved to be unstoppable.

A subset of supporters appear to think that the Scottish Premiership is being used to further the interests of Glasgow and the Irish team, but the Lisbon decision suggests the exact reverse.

One may argue that something went wrong during the game if a former FIFA referee disagreed with the ruling.
