‘Given Rangers a problem’: Kris Boyd fears £8m ace is destined to leave Ibrox this summer

Will Rangers and Vaclav Cerny also become star-crossed lovers after going through the grief of Abdallah Sima’s departure at the end of the 2023–24 season?

The fire is still burning brightly at Ibrox—Cerny was excellent once more as Rangers crushed Ross County 4-0 over the weekend—but Wolsburg’s caprices have left the Glasgow giants looking like a young, enamored child frantically begging the bride-to-be’s oh-so-intimidating father for his daughter’s hand in marriage. German reports state that Philippe Clement’s team “cannot afford” Wolfsburg’s asking price of £8 million.

Even though Cerny might not have much of a future at the Volkswagen Arena—especially now that the Bundesliga team signed Andreas Skov Olsen, who was once linked to Ibrox, from Club Brugge—Die Wolfe might believe that if Cerny is just too costly for the Gers, there will be plenty of other teams ready to pay £8 million for a winger who has already scored 20 goals and provided 20 assists by the beginning of February.

Kris Boyd is afraid of the Rangers leaving because of Vaclav Cerny’s price tag.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd isn’t exactly holding his breath. Between Cerny and his chief creator, Ianis Hagi, he believes the Romanian has a much better chance of starting 2025–2026 wearing the blue shirt.

Boyd muses, “I think there’s probably more chance of Ianis Hagi starting in the team [next season].” The once-forgotten player continued his incredible comeback on Sunday with a brace against Don Cowie’s County.

“You must give Ianis Hagi a lot of credit. He could have easily shut down the tools, turned off, and ended his contract.

“He may decide to move on, but he will benefit more from it than he would have a few months ago because he has shown up and put in a great deal of effort to make the difference he has.”

Hagi’s present contract expires in the summer of 2026. Rangers will only have two windows left to recover even a small portion of their £3 million investment if they are unable to agree to an extension.

Regarding Cerny, Boyd believes that Rangers might be paying a price for their inability to reach an agreement with the former Ajax youngster on an option-to-buy provision during the tense talks with Wolfsburg.
