After a phone conversation from Ange Postecoglou, Athys Tel made a remarkable U-turn and joined Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich.
Spurs confirmed in the closing hour of deadline day that they have signed Tel on a short-term loan with the option to purchase him in the summer for £46 million on a six-year contract.
Tel snubbed Spurs last week, despite chairman Daniel Levy’s visit to Munich. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal have since expressed interest.
However, United refused to pay a £5 million loan fee for the 19-year-old, allowing Spurs boss Postecoglou to call Tel and persuade the Frenchman that Spurs can provide him with the game time he desires.
As Levy negotiated a summer purchase option for Tel with Bayern, the player and his agent Gadiri Camara boarded a private plane and landed at Farnborough Airport at 2.30pm before proceeding to a medical.
It’s been a hectic few days for Levy, who has become a target for fans following Spurs’ slump in form.
