Now 10 points off of the playoff spots, Mike Dodds’ team might drop even further this weekend if they lose against Southampton, who now occupy fourth place in the league.
Although Sunderland and Rotherham are now the two most ineffective teams in the Championship, manager Jason Seelt has acknowledged that the players and manager believe they are about to turn things around.
“We have such a good group,” the Dutch defender stated in an interview with The Northern Echo.
“We’re not at all negative. The coach is speaking with us and advising us to maintain our current pace of improvement and to not allow outside distractions divert our attention. We’re just trying to stick together as a group right now.
“The manager has told us that we feel like we’re close to winning as well. Until the momentum turns in our favour, which hopefully will happen soon, we must continue to battle.
Do Sunderland have a chance to win?
Sunderland would win against most other Championship teams if they performed as well as they did in the second half of their match against Leicester City.
Our inability to play well for the entire ninety minutes—or well at all, as of late—is the issue.
You can pretty much count on players like Adil Aouchiche not performing as well as he does off the bench, even if we start with the same squad that finished the game on Tuesday. We couldn’t find the back of the net even if we played beautifully for ninety minutes, so playing good isn’t the solution to our issues either.
It’s true that we looked better against the Foxes, but that was the only sign of life we’ve had in weeks, so it seems unrealistic to expect these players to continue where we left off against Southampton. especially in light of our terrible track record when travelling.
The Black Cats won’t exactly be riding high after their one road victory in 13 games this weekend.
