Gardner Minshew, the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback, is declared out for the rest of the 2024 season after breaking his collarbone on a sack late in Sunday’s 29-19 home loss to the Denver Broncos. He was succeeded by Desmond Ridder.
Minshew had been performing well in Week 12 until his injury, completing 25 passes for 230 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also had three sacks and fumbled once. After Minshew left, Ridder passed for 64 yards and five completions. Meanwhile, punter AJ Cole made a 34-yard pass of his own. Despite their best efforts, the Raiders’ dreams for a comeback were dashed as Denver defeated them 29-19. This loss brings Las Vegas’ losing skid to seven games, with the majority of those defeats coming by at least two touchdowns. With a difficult schedule ahead, the Raiders face an uphill climb to turn their season around.
This loss brings Las Vegas’ losing skid to seven games, with the majority of those defeats coming by at least two touchdowns. With a difficult schedule ahead, the Raiders face an uphill climb to turn their season around. Aidan O’Connell is likely to return for the Raiders in their Black Friday game against the Chiefs. He is eligible to be activated this week, and many sources say he will be back on the field. At the present, O’Connell and Desmond Ridder are the Raiders’ most likely quarterback choices.
However, Las Vegas might consider signing Daniel Jones by submitting a waiver claim or waiting for him to pass waivers. The Raiders have seen some of the league’s worst quarterback play this season, and with intentions to draft a quarterback next year, it may be smart to give Jones a shot to start in the season’s closing weeks. The New York Giants startled the NFL on Friday morning when they announced Jones’ release. The former sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft had a tumultuous stay in New York and is now expected to be waived, leaving the Giants with more than $20 million in dead salary space. While Minshew’s injury is clearly bad news for the Raiders, it also might push them to consider the former Giant.
This season-ending injury caps off a rough stretch for Minshew Minshew. He was benched three times prior to his most recent injury, and in nine games, he has 178 completions for 1,783 yards and eight touchdowns, but he has also thrown nine interceptions and been sacked 26 times. This is a sharp contrast to his success with the Indianapolis Colts last season, when he started all 17 games, threw for 3,305 yards, and scored 15 touchdowns. That season gave him his first and only Pro Bowl selection.
