Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive, as we look at the possibility of any deadline-day outgoings.
Despite much speculation linking Frank Lampard with a number of players, Coventry City has had a relatively quiet mid-term transfer window thus far.
The Sky Blues signed Matt Grimes from Swansea City for a rumoured sum of £3.5m-£4m on Friday.
Outgoings include striker Fabio Tavares, who has been loaned to League One Burton Albion, and teenage midfielder Kai Andrews, who has joined Motherwell in the Scottish Premier to gain playing experience before the season ends.
Decisions on returned pair Ryan Howley and Jack Burroughs have yet to be made, and it is unclear whether they will be sent on another loan or remain at home for the remainder of the campaign.
Burroughs, who has primarily played as a winger/fullback in previous seasons, was recalled from Kilmarnock this month, ending his season-long loan and returning to his native club. Since then, he’s played for the Under-21s and was an unused substitute against Watford.
Howley, who can play in midfield or as a centre-back, has returned from Scottish Championship side Ayr United and has played for the Under-21s as well as being an unused substitute against Swansea this weekend.
When asked what the plan is for the pair, whether they would be loaned out somewhere, signed on permanent contracts, or stay close to home and be part of the Sky Blues group for the rest of the season, Lampard said: “No decision has been made.”
When asked if he is keeping an open mind about the duo, he replied: “Yes, and it will be a case of what’s best for us and what’s best for them.” If they are given good opportunity, they may be able to go and play games, which is always beneficial to young players. It would have been nice to sit on the bench and feel it today (for Ryan), but there is no plan for them at the moment.”
The only other players who could be considered for a deadline day exit are custodian Brad Collins, now that Ben Wilson has returned to full fitness, though Lampard may be hesitant to leave himself short in case the latter has a recurrence with his knee after six months out injured.
Elsewhere, winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues might arguably benefit from more regular games, and a loan spell could hasten his development rather than earning a few minutes here and there from the bench, as he did on Saturday when he came on in the 89th minute against Swansea. However, given Lampard’s lack of numbers in training, he may wish to keep the winger with the Sky Blues.
