The construction of a heritage park on the site of a castle will begin in early March, according to the council.
The project, located in Northampton’s Marefair neighborhood, will contain a castle-themed play area, a community garden, and a walking track that follows Northampton Castle’s footprint.
The castle was originally constructed in 1084, but it fell into ruin and was dismantled in 1879.
West Northamptonshire Council believed that the new park will “celebrate our town’s rich history while enhancing its future”.
Northampton was previously home to one of England’s most notable Norman castles, complete with deep ditches on three sides, expansive grounds, and a massive keep.
It was used by Parliamentarians during the Civil War, and after the monarchy was restored, it was nearly destroyed on King Charles II’s orders.
The building was dismantled in 1879 to make space for a railway station.
According to West Northamptonshire Council, the history park “complements the wider transformation of Northampton town centre, enhancing the entrance into the town from both rail and car, with work scheduled for completion by late summer 2025”.
It was funded with £1.6 million from the Towns Fund, developer contributions, and the council itself.
Visitors will be able to view a heritage chronology that tells the story of the area, as well as walk around the ancient castle’s footprint.
The castle-themed play area would “feature cherry trees that echo the orchard formerly within the castle walls”.
Dan Lister, cabinet member for culture and recreation on the Conservative-controlled council, stated, “This exciting new green space will celebrate our town’s rich history while also enhancing its future.”
“Marefair Heritage Park will play an important role in making Northampton a vibrant destination for residents, businesses and visitors.”
This week, a proposal was announced to transform a 90-foot (27.4-metre) brick wall in the castle area into “a vibrant and educational landmark”.
West Northamptonshire Council is utilizing £20,909 in Arts Council England funding to paint a mural near Northampton Station.
