Danny Rohl shares update on injured Sheffield Wednesday duo – only one could return this year

Although Sheffield Wednesday’s team under Danny Rohl is almost completely healthy, two players still need to recover.

Sheffield Wednesday appears to be about to make some progress this season, despite their lack of consistency.

Lately, performances have been outstanding. Danny Rohl’s team lost to Cardiff City over the weekend following a promising but wasteful performance, despite the fact that the victory against Norwich City was a highlight and the effort against Sheffield United demonstrated a lot of spirit.

Following his most recent update on the injured pair, Rohl will have to enter those games without both Akin Famewo and Olaf Kobacki, even if the next few games could be crucial for Sheffield Wednesday this season.

Akin Famewo likely out until March with injury

Before Sheffield Wednesday’s Tuesday night trip to Hull, Rohl spoke with The Star about Famewo and Kobacki’s injury status and when we may anticipate seeing them both return to action.

According to Rohl, “March will be the earliest point with Akin.” And that is a really long distance. He has to be strengthened, and that will take time.

Rohl said, “Olaf, we’re hoping it’ll be by the end of the year, that one was also a muscle injury,” which was better news for Kobacki. However, we now have three goalkeepers and 22 players available, which is a terrific situation for this time of year, in my opinion.

With theSpeaking to The Star ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Hull on Tuesday night, Rohl discussed the injury status of both Famewo and Kobacki, and revealed when we can expect to see them both back in action.

“I think with Akin the earliest point will be March,” Rohl said. “And that’s a long, long way. We have to build him up and there’s a long way to go on that.”

It was better news for Kobacki, though, with Rohl adding: “Olaf we’re hoping it’ll be by the end of the year, that one was also a muscle injury. But at the moment we have 22 players, three goalkeepers available, and I think that is a good point at this time of the year.”

With the return of Nathaniel Chalobah last week, the Sheffield Wednesday squad is now about as close to being injury-free as one could hope for.

Max Lowe now key to Sheffield Wednesday defence

Fortunately for Rohl, Max Lowe has emerged as a key component of Sheffield Wednesday’s defensive line during Famewo’s absence.

Over the past three games, the left-back has demonstrated that he is more than capable of settling into the position for the long haul after adapting to play at center-half.Luckily for Rohl, Famewo’s absence has coincided with the rise of Max Lowe as a crucial cog in Sheffield Wednesday’s defensive line.

The left-back has adapted to play at centre-half and, over the last three games, has shown he is more than capable of slotting into that role for the long-term.

Statistic (2024/25 season) Max Lowe Akin Famewo
Appearances 14 10
Minutes played 985 750
Tackles won per 90 1.47 1.20
Interceptions per 90 1.65 2.77
Blocks per 90 1.57 0.85
Stats via FBRefIt’s unclear if Rohl will try to sign a new defender during the January transfer window or if he will rely on Lowe and the youthful Gabriel Otegbayo to fill in for Famewo, who is now out until March.

To be fair, the Owls appear to be playing excellent defence.Sheffield Wednesday should prioritise finding reinforcements in the attack, although Kobacki’s comeback might be a huge help in the next year.
