Ellis Simms, a former striker for Everton, has now scored two hat-tricks in his last three games for Coventry City while his previous employers struggle in front of goal in the Premier League.
As Sean Dyche faced the cameras following Everton’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United at home on Saturday, one could have forgiven him for thinking he was experiencing a strong case of déjà vu.
The Toffees lost the decisive match for what felt like the countless times in 2023–24 alone as a result of squandering opportunities at one end. Despite Alphonse Areola’s outstanding performance in goal, the belief that Everton is a team that never seems to be able to find the back of the net persisted.
Considering that, even though Ellis Simms, who Everton sold last summer, has scored hat tricks in a remarkably short amount of time, his current form feels like insult on top of injury.
Ex-Everton striker is addicted to scoring
Simms, who was recruited in after lucky striker Viktor Gyokeres left, ended Maidstone United’s FA Cup hopes with a ferocious treble in late February. On Tuesday night, Coventry ran wild against hopeless Rotherham United, and Simms scored another hat-trick.
Remarkably, he scored three goals in just 32 minutes in the first half against the unfortunate Millers.
Regarding a man whose only Premier League goal was in a draw away to Chelsea in May 2023, Coventry manager Mark Robins stated, “He should be confident” (Coventry Telegraph). “He handed the ball away once or twice after he got it. And he’ll be amazing once he realises this.

And when he isn’t thinking about anything, you can see that he can finish with both his right and left foot. One of the major factors is that he just finished.
Spurs require a goal scorer.
The former Hearts and Sunderland loanee, Simms, had had a rough go of things with the Sky Blues.But Robins is optimistic that the 23-year-old’s run of six goals in his previous three games will mark a turning point in his career.
When Kasey Palmer slid him in for a chance to score at West Brom last week, Robins says, “he took it early and hit it over the bar.”
But he could have finished if he had taken his time and perhaps even pushed it a little bit farther, closer to the objective. It forces the keeper to work even if he places it in the same spot and strikes the target—you never know.
“When he realises that he’s going to be some player, he has incredible strength and pace.”
