Mikey Johnston reveals when he knew Celtic career was OVER as one move triggers West Brom loan
Since leaving Celtic Park in January, the Ireland international has been playing well for the Baggies.
Since he signed a loan deal to join West Brom at the end of the January transfer window, honest Mike Johnston acknowledges that Celtic had too many wide players.
In the closing hours of the transfer window, the winger relocated south to the English Championship, where Brendan Rodgers had an abundance of attacking alternatives on the wings. With James Forrest, Luis Palma, Yang, Liel Abada, and Daizen Maeda already in the building, the £3 million signing of Rapid Vienna’s Nicolas Kuhn proved to be too much. Marco Tilio also left mid-season to return on loan to Melbourne City.
Ireland international Johnston has scored three goals since joining the Hawthorns, including a spectacular goal against Coventry last weekend that increased the Baggies’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs. West Brom supporters have called for the 24-year-old’s contract to be extended at the end of the current campaign due to his impressive play.
Johnston also acknowledges that with so many players in the same position at Parkhead, including Kuhn’s arrival, he would find it difficult to receive opportunities. When asked by Sky Sports if he needed to put his attention away from Celtic and concentrate on regular game time, Johnston replied, “Yeah, look, it was just a game time thing.”
“I believe we had eight wingers in the end. Getting the minutes I wanted was always going to be difficult, and I wanted to improve on last year.
“As I become older, I want to advance in my work. I thought this was a good step, and since both clubs had agreed on everything, it went quite smoothly.”
