While this news isn’t about landing Rocco Spindler, Indiana still landed a solid offensive lineman out of the transfer portal with his teammate Pat Coogan officially picking the Hoosiers to play for next season.

Coogan was scheduled to visit Michigan this season; another team is very interested in the veteran offensive lineman, who would be a big addition to protect their quarterback next season, but Coogan announced his commitment to Indiana before his scheduled trip.

As a full starter for Notre Dame this season, Coogan emerged as a leader for the Fighting Irish this season and became famous for his pregame speeches to fire his team up. Coogan’s experience on the offensive line allowed running back Jerimiyah Love to eclipse 1,125 yards this season.

The good news for Indiana is that Coogan has experience playing both center and left tackle, so they have the ability to move him around where they need him. The Hoosiers lost some experience on the line this offseason, so landing Coogan is huge, and if Indiana can land his teammate Spindler, this line could look really scary for whoever they will be protecting next season.

Looking at the quarterbacks Indiana brought in this season, it will probably be a battle between Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza and Old Dominion transfer Grant Wilson. Mendoza seems like the favorite to win the job as of right now, but as we all know with Cignetti, nothing is ever given, it must be earned.

Coogan will bring a veteran presence to a younger offensive line that needs help in protecting the quarterback. One of the big reasons Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke struggled so much against Notre Dame in the first round of the College Football Playoff was because his protection broke down a lot, so a solid line could be a real game-changer for Indiana next season.
