OLLIE WATKINS GOAL CELEBRATION: POLICE TO CONTACT ASTON VILLA AND BRENTFORD TO ‘FIND OUT FURTHER DETAILS’
On Sunday, the Metropolitan Police will confer with Brentford and Aston Villa over the circumstances surrounding Ollie Watkins’ goal celebration. The striker said that during his team’s 2-1 Premier League victory on Sunday, a fan verbally abused him.
He pointed at a Bees fan while standing in the net to celebrate. A spokeswoman for the police stated that they are “aware of the claims.”
It has been confirmed by the Metropolitan Police that they will be getting in touch with Brentford and Aston Villa in order to “find out further details” regarding Ollie Watkins’ goal celebration over the weekend.
In the 85th minute, Watkins gave Villa the lead against his old team, and the team rallied to win 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The 27-year-old then stood in the back of the net pointing at a supporter in the home end who he said had verbally abused him.
A police spokesperson said: “We are aware of the claims.
“Officers will be making contact with officials at Aston Villa and Brentford to find out further details.”
Watkins’ celebration sparked angry scenes, with a scuffle between the two sets of players breaking out inside the goalmouth.
It was far from the only flashpoint though, with Brentford having Ben Mee dismissed in the 71st minute for a studs-up tackle on Leon Bailey.
Villa were then reduced to ten men themselves deep into added time as Boubacar Kamara received his marching orders.
“There was one individual who had been giving me abuse all game, from the first corner,” Watkins clarified.
“He’d been on to me all game saying personal stuff. I wasn’t racially abused, but he was saying a lot of stuff.
I thought ‘I’m going to get him back’.
“It was aimed at him, not anyone else at the stadium, I have a lot of respect for the club, the people here, the owner, the manager. That’s what I said to him after, when I was walking off.”
Aston Villa expressed their backing for their striker in a statement released on Sunday evening, calling for “zero tolerance to abuse in football.”
“Aston Villa FC wants to express its support for Ollie Watkins,” they said
“With the utmost respect for the big majority of Brentford fans and for the club, we ask the authorities to investigate this incident to find this individual.”
Bees boss Thomas Frank meanwhile stated that there was no ill-feeling from his part over the celebration.
“Ollie and I went to each other after the game,” he said. “He said there was a situation with a fan. I know Ollie is a top person of top integrity.”
