David Pleat tips Tottenham to part ways with fan favourite; admits it is ‘time to go’

Son Heung-min’s future as captain of Tottenham Hotspur has been the subject of some conjecture in recent weeks.

The South Korean player is in the latter year of his Tottenham Hotspur Stadium contract (Transfermarkt). The bulk

of the supporters had anticipated that the team would extend the star forward’s contract, but according to reports,

Spurs have chosen to exercise the one-year option in his contract, extending his stay in North London until 2026.

Son Heung-min has missed six games in all competitions so far this 2024–25 season due to injuries, but his abilities

are undeniable and everyone can see them. He has therefore performed well in the last third, tallying three goals and

four assists throughout 12 games.

Nonetheless, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way are being cautious about handing a big fat contract to their skipper, who

will turn 33 in July. Now, former Tottenham manager David Pleat feels the end of the ongoing campaign will be the

right time for the club to part ways with the South Asian superstar.”To know when it’s appropriate to leave.” Pleat

stated on The Joy of Football podcast, “It would be interesting to see what Tottenham does with Son at the end of

this season, which has a few months left.”

The idea of him receiving an additional year is being discussed a lot. However, I wonder if now would be the greatest

moment to take advantage of that if they can agree with another club. Just my viewpoint.Despite his advanced age

and indications of a possible deterioration, Son remains one of Tottenham’s most useful players.

It would be bad for the team if the South Korean left as a free agent. He may benefit from moving to Saudi Arabia

next year, as he has been linked to it.From the club’s financial perspective alone, it will be advantageous. Son’s value

would be preserved and the club wouldn’t have to risk him going on a free transfer if they were only willing to offer

him a 12-month extension rather than a new deal.

Son has served the North Londoners admirably, but when it comes to assigning players contracts, sentimentality

must not be taken into account. As Son ages, his abilities will progressively begin to decline; hence, Tottenham should

not offer him a big contract.
