Sunderland’s rivals in the Championship have won the race to sign the Tottenham striker on loan.
Will Lankshear, a reported Sunderland and Middlesbrough target, has signed with Tony Mowbray’s West Brom.
The Black Cats were among several clubs said to be interested in loaning Tottenham Hotspur striker Lankshear during the summer, after the former Arsenal and Sheffield United academy frontman was handed a new long-term contract as a reward for his progress since joining Spurs in the summer of 2022.
The highly regarded 19-year-old has made six first-team appearances for Spurs this season, including a Europa League goal against Galatasaray in November. West Brom won the race to sign the player, beating Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Hull City. On Friday night, the Championship club announced a loan agreement that will last till the season ends.
Lankshear, who will join Mowbray’s squad on Monday, told the club’s in-house media team: “I am thrilled to join this fantastic club. I’m excited to meet my new teammates and play in front of all the fans.
“This is an excellent opportunity for me to fight for game time and, hopefully, produce goals that will help the team progress towards promotion during my time here. Tony Mowbray is a manager who has received only positive feedback, and I’m eager to learn as much as I can from him over the next three months.
Sporting director Andrew Nestor added: “We have known since the summer that we would need to prioritise the addition of another striker in this window, and we are delighted to have brought in Will, who we have been watching for some time and is one of our top targets for reinforcement in this area.
“We spoke with his club prior to January and had to be patient because loan agreements typically happen later in the window owing to particular club circumstances. We can now look forward to having Will in our squad, and we all believe he has the potential to make a significant contribution between now and the conclusion of the season.”
