Why Rochdale Fire Festival Was Cancelled This Month

The Ignite Fire Festival in Rochdale, planned for November 22–23, 2024, was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions brought by Storm Bert. Forecasts predicted freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and strong winds reaching up to 40 mph, creating hazardous conditions for an outdoor event. The festival, known for its intricate fire installations, light displays, and live performances, posed increased safety risks due to slippery surfaces and the challenging environment.

Rochdale Borough Council, the event organizers, prioritized public safety in their decision to cancel. Councillor Sue Smith explained that the conditions would have jeopardized the wellbeing of attendees, staff, and performers. However, the council aimed to proceed with the final day of the festival on November 24, coinciding with the town’s Christmas Lights Switch-On.

The festival, supported by Arts Council England, was organized in partnership with Walk the Plank and Culture Co-op. Despite the disappointment, organizers remain hopeful about continuing the tradition under safer conditions in the future.
