Nottingham Forest defender hints at retirement in emotional farewell statement

Latest Nottingham Forest news from NottinghamshireLive as Reds defender Felipe releases an emotional statement

Felipe has intimated that he might retire and declared that he will quit Nottingham Forest at the end of the current campaign.

The Brazilian, who joined the City Ground in January 2023 from Atletico Madrid, was instrumental in their successful season-long attempt to survive. Felipe played in all but two league games starting in February of 2022–2023 as the Reds advanced with a game remaining.

However, the 34-year-old has spent a large portion of this season dealing with a significant knee ailment that has limited him to just seven appearances in Garibaldi Red this season. And as the season comes to a conclusion in May, the center-back has decided to depart from Forest.

Felipe announced on Instagram that the current campaign would be his last for the Reds and hinted that he could now retire from the professional game altogether. “Hello to you all…. Today I’m here to make a statement about my future,” he said.

Felipe of Nottingham Forest applauds the fans after the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and West Ham United at City Ground on February 17, 2024 in Nottingham, England

“Over the past few months, I’ve given it a lot of thought, and my family and I have decided on my football career path. Great memories were made, a career for which I will always be grateful, playing for the Brazilian national team, fantastic clubs in four different countries, and a wealth of history that will last a lifetime.

“But here in Nottingham Forest, England, it’s time to leave the lawns and the plan is to end the season. Since I still have a contract and I want to honour him as I have always done for all the teams I have defended, it is still too early to reveal the reasons, but I will do so in the future.

But I wanted to come here to advance this matter and talk honestly and with an open heart because I wanted to show respect to the teams that have been seeking for me in the future, as well as to my current club. Thank you, and let’s try to enjoy these final few months to the fullest, brimming with enthusiasm, fervour, and commitment.”
