According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers and Celtic want a “major shake-up” to prevent English clubs from stealing young players.
According to the newspaper (4 March), SPFL clubs want to amend the rules to impose full transfer costs for 14-year-old players.
The Press & Journal reported on March 4 that SPFL teams are considering decreasing the age for academy graduates to sign full-time to 14.
Rangers, Celtic, and other teams are justified in requesting this transfer modification.
All Scottish clubs, including Rangers, are justified in attempting to implement professional contracts for young players as early as the age of 14, in order to protect their talent pool and prevent English teams from stealing its possibilities.
The existing system, in which players may only turn professional at the age of 16, puts Scottish clubs at risk of losing their finest young players to English clubs, which can give professional contracts at an earlier age.
By enabling professional contracts at the age of 14, Scottish clubs will gain more control over their young development and boost their chances of retaining excellent players.
This approach seeks to level the playing field and ensure that Scottish clubs are fairly compensated for developing young talent.
Although Gers received compensation from Aston Villa for Rory Wilson, the current regulations still favor English teams.
Furthermore, given the harsher rules on signing youngsters under 18 from outside the UK post-Brexit, Scottish clubs are properly looking for measures to enhance their position and secure Scottish football’s future.
