Everton face decision over signing teenage forward after perfect first impression

On trial at Finch Farm, Omari Benjamin scored the game-winning goal for the Under-21s on Saturday.

Omari Benjamin, a bright talent from Arsenal, is on trial at Everton.

Coaches at Finch Farm are evaluating the forward, a Welsh youth international who was hailed as a rising star as he advanced through the Gunners’ academy.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old had his first opportunity to play in a competitive setting as he started for the Under-21s against Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2.

Benjamin scored in Paul Tait’s team’s 2-1 triumph.

Benjamin, who has played for Arsenal in the U18 Premier League and has three goals and an assist from seven games this season, is a product of the club’s Hale End programme. He has played for the club’s U21 team and scored in Arsenal’s FA Youth Cup final loss to West Ham United the previous year.

Tait’s team is improving as the second half of the season progresses, as seen by Benjamin’s game-winning goal in the weekend’s comeback triumph against Spurs. Mackenzie Hunt and Jenson Metcalfe were able to resume their youth careers with the injury recoveries of Andre Gomes and Lewis Dobbin. Tyler Onyango, who scored Everton’s equaliser, and Lewis Warrington both made full recoveries from long-term problems. Like Warrington, Reece Welch has returned from a loan spell to Merseyside. The Blues, who lost their talented scorer Francis Okoronkwo to a hamstring injury in the opening minute, benefited from Benjamin’s entrance.

This season’s U21 squad members that have gone on trial with Everton and played forward have not been limited to Benjamin. Malik Mothersille, a former Chelsea player, was a member of Tait’s team earlier in the season before joining League One’s Peterborough United. The 19-year-old striker Kingsford Boakye, a free agent who had previously played for AC Milan, was signed in January, sparking interest in Benjamin.
