NFL rumors: Cowboys eyeing ex-Bills, Browns play caller as next OC

NFL rumors: Cowboys eyeing ex-Bills, Browns play caller as next OC.

Following difficult seasons in both cities, the Cowboys are considering a former Bills and Browns play caller for offensive coordinator.

The Dallas Cowboys are considering hiring Ken Dorsey as their offensive coordinator. New head coach Brian Schottenheimer is now assembling his coaching staff. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that negotiations are underway, but no formal interviews have yet been scheduled.

Dorsey, 43, has been the offensive coordinator for both the Buffalo Bills (2022-2023) and the Cleveland Browns (2024), but his recent track record raises concerns. He was let go by both teams in consecutive seasons because his offenses failed to deliver.

Dorsey’s Buffalo team appeared to be strong at initially, placing second in total yards and scoring in 2022. However, in 2023, his numbers fell, dropping to fourth in scoring and sixth in yards before being fired halfway. Turnovers were a huge issue, with the Bills leading the league in giveaways at the time of his departure.

Things became considerably worse in Cleveland. The Browns finished last in scoring (15.2 points per game) and struggled to move the ball, averaging only 94.6 rushing yards per game. Injuries to stars such as Deshaun Watson and Nick Chubb did not help, but the franchise nonetheless fired Dorsey following a 3-14 season.

However, he has prior experience working with quarterbacks, most notably assisting Josh Allen in his development into a Buffalo star. If he settles in Dallas, he won’t be calling plays as Schottenheimer is currently the primary play-caller for 2025.

The Cowboys aim to improve their run game, which ranked 27th with 100.3 yards per game last season. While Ken Dorsey’s offenses in Buffalo were productive on the ground, his experience in Cleveland offered a different picture, making it questionable whether he is a fit for what Dallas needs.

The Cowboys, like other candidates, including Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams, will examine their options before making a final decision.
