Unai Emery Q&A: Every word Aston Villa boss said about Brentford win, Watkins, Kamara and Martinez

BirminghamLive provides Aston Villa news as Unai Emery addresses the media following his team’s victory over Brentford in west London.

Uni Emery, the head coach of Aston Villa, addressed the media following his team’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

After halftime, Alex Moreno and Ollie Watkins completely change the course of the match, with Keane Lewis-Potter scoring the first goal late in the first half. Emi Martinez tried to lift Neal Maupay off the ground by his shirt, which sparked an argument between the two sets of players. Boubacar Kamara was sent off for raising his hand on Yegor Yarmolyuk.

After Watkins celebrated his goal in front of a Brentford supporter who had been harassing one of the striker’s family members during the first half, it seemed as though tensions increased. Here are all of Emery’s comments following full-time…

“I’m not entirely sure. I want to evaluate the first and second halves of the game as well as our management of the game following the red card. Then, since I’m not entirely sure what happened to Ollie at the end of the game, I also want to analyze the events involving Duran, Martinez, Zaniolo, and Zaniolo.

“Of course, our behaviour is being fantastic, but today maybe not good. I want to explain to the players how we can react when we are under pressure in some circumstances there was provocation from them.”

Have you asked what caused Watkins’ anger?

“No. I didn’t know who scored. I thought it was Konsa! I can explain everything I watched and overall I can do the analysis but not deeply.”

Do you think both clubs will get charged by the FA?

“The match was very tight. I think we were under pressure and trying to control our mind. The more relevant in the match is how we played and how we played in the match.

“More or less, I think something could happen could happen under the moment we had today, but I want to control the things I don’t want to have in my team. They are small things, small things.”

What did you make of Martinez’s behaviour?

“It is the same, but in 100 per cent trying to blame the action, but the opponent’s behaviour wasn’t very good. I am going to speak with Emi, but the most important thing was that he played very well and he did a fantastic match. Of course, controlling different circumstances as well we had to be clever in our mind and trying to control it.”

Can you push on from here?

“You are asking me about Ollie Watkins and someone told me it was because a supporter was speaking with him. Tomorrow we are going to meet speaking about the analysis of the match and one part of it is to try and understand what happened when we lost a bit of our control.”

Why did you go on the pitch?

“I went on the pitch to keep the players calm. I received a yellow card for it. Emi was a bit upset and I [told him to] try and keep calm.”

How important is Ollie Watkins for your team?

“He is amazing and always he is doing his work. When he is scoring he is adding his best quality which is to score goals. He is really being very competitive and adapting each game to what we need. He was holding up the ball very well today against Pinnock.”

How important was the Brentford red card?

“We were speaking in Bournemouth because we weren’t intense like the match demanded. Today was the same. They played very intense. It is part of the game, but of course we are trying to work and reducing red cards in some circumstances.

“This is the reason why I am a little but upset about the red card for Kamara. We were playing getting more options with one player or more to get in the box. That’s how we scored two goals and got back the result.”

What did you think of the performance generally?

We did a great job competing today. Unlike in Bournemouth, we didn’t compete today. We were also adjusting to them and attempting to manage the game given the situation.

They did not have several important players. We had a fantastic opportunity to play against a team that plays with the same zeal and spirit as other players. I knew going into the match that this would be a very tough place to win. We tried to force our strategy on them while playing with respect, in my opinion.
