‘Huge shift’: Phil Smith’s Sunderland player rating photos after Norwich loss – including five 7s and four 5s

Sunderland player rankings by Phil Smith following the Black Cats’ 1-0 loss to Norwich City at Carrow Road.
At Carrow Road, Norwich defeated Sunderland 1-0. But how did each Black Cat perform individually?

Josh Sargent of Norwich scored the game-winning goal nine minutes into stoppage time following a goalless first half. As a result, Sunderland has now lost four straight games and is farther out of the Championship play-off spots.

At Carrow Road, Phil Smith assessed the Sunderland players as follows:

1. Six Anthony Patterson
He had little control over Sargent’s goal because Sunderland’s defense was unable to stop the ball from bouncing off it, and he completed the majority of his duties without incident.

2. Trai Hume (six)
Sometimes gave the ball away, but he also made some strong challenges and put in some dangerous crosses that, given the all too common trend of late, arguably should have resulted in a lot more goals from his opponents. 6.

3. Jenson Seelt (7
Though there were a few unsteady moments during possession, overall the game was strong with some excellent moments both in and out of possession – undoubtedly one for the future. 7

4. Luke O’Nien, rank six

Utilized the ball effectively in the opening encounter and dominated most of his duels with the formidable Norwich offensive line. Despite his one impressive block in the second half, Sargent was able to score the winner thanks to Hjelde and him. 6.
