49ers Made 2 Notable Hires Today

The legendary San Francisco 49ers made some surprising decisions as the NFL offseason got underway, including the decision to break ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks following their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Generally speaking, if a team advances to the Super Bowl—win or lose—the franchise maintains the roster largely intact unless other teams begin stealing its coaching staff. However, the 49ers made the decision not to do that.

The 49ers parted ways with Wilks, which meant that the organisation had a very desirable opening on Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff. Defensive coordinators searching for a job this summer were sure to take notice.

As per Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers have finally identified Wilks’ replacement. Nick Sorensen will take over as head coach, and the organisation will also appoint former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to an unspecified role.

Both of these are intriguing and surprising decisions, particularly bringing in Staley following a dismal season that ended with the Chargers allowing the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders to score 63 points against them.

San Francisco still boasts one of the greatest lineups in the NFL on both sides of the ball, thus regardless of the decisions made here, the 49ers are still highly anticipated to be among the top teams in the league come football season.
