Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has replied to speculation surrounding Caoimhin Kelleher, who was heavily linked with Celtic in January.The Scottish champions have been linked with the Ireland goalkeeper, and their interest is expected to reignite in the summer when Joe Hart retires.
During the media conference before the game against Nottingham Forest, Klopp was asked about Kelleher’s impact as a replacement for the injured Allison.
“It is usual to have these conversations with players who are prepared.
“An outfield player in a situation like Caoimhin’s would never come to discuss these points of view since they play ten other positions. It’s a little different with a goalkeeper, but it’s never ‘You have to stay, shut up’.
“It was just an ordinary talk about his future. The most important thing was to help him move forward in his development by playing more games. I believe he would be happy with the decision he made during the summer.
“For me, there was no threat of him leaving, so it didn’t matter who asked. For us to have a chance of succeeding in a competitive market, the pricing had to be acceptable.
“This is not like other goalkeepers who move from A to B for £15 million or £20 million.“”That is completely unrealistic and ridiculous.”
According to sources, the Liverpool No.2 gets £10k each week, despite the Reds apparently valuing the 25-year-old at £15-20 million. These figures would put Kelleher out of Celtic’s budget; nevertheless, if the player is interested, a deal may be reached. The trouble is that Kelleher has impressed in recent games, particularly in the League Cup Final, where he made several crucial saves to deprive Chelsea before Liverpool won the trophy.
Celtic are reportedly interested in a loan-to-purchase agreement that would include a temporary move to Paradise in the summer, followed by an option to buy, which is typically agreed upon in advance by parties. Rival teams are vying for his services, meanwhile, as the Reds’ stopper seeks regular game time.
