Sheffield Wednesday to press on with ex-Southampton target as transfer window nears end
The Star is aware that as the transfer window nears its conclusion, Sheffield Wednesday is looking to do business.
The Owls have not yet added players to their roster 30 days into the winter transfer window, which is now open until
February 3 at 11 p.m. Shea Charles, a midfielder on loan from Southampton, has been re-signed by Wednesday, who
will pay a greater loan fee and a larger wage percentage in recognition of the crucial role he has played since joining
from Southampton in July.
As the transfer window draws to a close, The Star has learnt that another Southampton-affiliated individual has been
elevated to a top transfer target. After celebrating promotion with the Saints, veteran midfielder Stuart Armstrong
quit English football in the summer, capping a career with 214 appearances at St Mary’s. He signed with the MLS
team Vancouver Whitecaps in the beginning of September, even though the Owls were considering him in the
summer.
Reported elsewhere as a potential target for Wednesday this time around, The Star understands their interest in the
51-cap Scotland international has intensified and that the Owls are keen to bring him to the club before the window
is through.
Armstrong, a two-time Scottish triple champion with Celtic who represented Scotland in the European
Championships last summer, would add a wealth of experience to the Wednesday team and provide manager Danny
Röhl more options in the midfield and advanced parts of the park. When the German was Ralph Hasenhüttl’s
assistant manager at Southampton, the 32-year-old collaborated with Röhl.
Vissel Kobe left-back Ryo Hatsuse has shown enough to be taken into consideration with talks still going on, and
Wednesday is reportedly aiming to bolster in a few areas, including attack and defence. Behind the scenes, more
targets have been found.
