Sheffield United are expected to beat Sheffield Wednesday to the Premier League deal of an ex-Arsenal player.
Sheffield United are expected to beat city rivals Wednesday to the signing of a Premier League right-back ahead of this weekend’s game against Derby County. United have abandoned their pursuit of Jonjoe Kenny after his current club Hertha Berlin stalled negotiations over his future.
So United moved fast to complete a deal for Harry Clarke, a 23-year-old right back who has appeared seven times for Ipswich Town this season. As The Star reported yesterday, Wednesday had turned their interest in Clarke into a concrete bid, but Bramall Lane now appears to be his most likely destination, ahead of a loan arrangement until the end of the season.
We can tell that Clarke is having a medical with the Blades today ahead of a move, with the hope that it will be approved in time for this weekend’s trip to Pride Park. Clarke must register by midday on Friday to be eligible to make his United debut in that game.
Clarke began his career at Portman Road and was re-signed from Arsenal for a sum allegedly in the region of £1 million in January 2023. He is not the only Ipswich player who has piqued United’s interest this window.
We understand that commanding Ipswich Town defender Luke Woolfenden was also on United’s radar as they sought replacements for the injured Harry Souttar at centre back.
But Ipswich are fighting for their survival in the Premier League, and United have been informed that they intend to keep Woolfenden in Suffolk ahead of a crucial second half of the season.
