Both Josh Tymon and Josh Key have had difficult starts to the season, and their performances in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Norwich City were the worst of the bunch.
Although it’s fair to claim that Swansea’s full-backs have always been more adept at attacking than defending, their recent play is unavoidable given that they are losing goals in almost every game.
As the Canaries ran wild on Saturday, Tymon was caught out of position several times. Key’s dispossessed midfield goal, which has become all too common in recent weeks, gave Norwich their third goal.
It leaves Swansea with an unlikely new transfer priority in the final week of the transfer window, and it’s a problem that must be addressed.
Norwich City collapse leaves Swansea City with a new transfer priority
On the whole, Tymon and Key have been decent signings for Swansea since joining from Stoke City and Exeter City respectively, in the summer of 2023, but their recent drop-off in form can’t be ignored.
In possession, Tymon and Key get forward, with Williams understandably keen to utilise their attacking threat, and Swansea revert to a back three, with Matt Grimes dropping between the centre-backs.
Swansea is vulnerable down the sides as a result, and they have been caught off guard numerous times this season, most notably in the loss at Carrow Road.
It’s a dangerous style of play because you always risk being caught off guard by a counterattack. On Saturday, Norwich scored at least two goals when Tymon was completely out of position, giving Josh Sargent the best opportunity to score.
Williams must be tempted to utilize Burnley loanee Hannes Delcroix at left-back, a position he has previously played for Anderlecht, as Swansea might use a more practical strategy in the upcoming weeks to gain some points given their recent run of play.
