“Exceptional value” – Coventry City surprise issued at £3.5m Swansea City, Matt Grimes reveal

With the asking price set by their Championship opponents and an apparent agreement approaching, Coventry City has been encouraged to finalize a deal for Swansea City captain Matt Grimes.

After replacing Mark Robins at the CBS Arena in November, Frank Lampard is attempting to make the first addition of his Sky Blues tenure.

Rabbi Matondo, a winger for Rangers, was almost signed by the former Derby and Everton head coach, who is also showing interest in bringing Tyrique George on loan from Chelsea.

But Grimes seems to be the player closest to finalizing a transfer to the West Midlands, as Coventry is ready to snatch the seasoned midfield player away.

Matt Grimes of Swansea City is a transfer target for Coventry City.

Grimes, a mainstay at the Swansea.com Stadium for many years, had two different offers from Coventry, according to reports on Monday afternoon.

Despite having two bids rejected, Coventry is still optimistic about reaching a deal, and Grimes is said to be eager to join the team.

However, they have put in a third proposal, and a deal is almost final.

Grimes, who signed an extension earlier this season but is now very unlikely to see out those terms, is under contract in South Wales until 2027.

Swansea has set an asking price of £3.5 million for him, according to the story that FLW broke on Tuesday morning.

Grimes has been a vital component of the Swans since their Premier League relegation in 2018, thus Coventry’s win will essentially be their loss.

The 29-year-old has started every game under Luke Williams this season, but it seems like he made his last Swans appearance on Saturday in the team’s humiliating 5-1 loss to Norwich City.

He may be on the other team when Coventry hosts the Jack Army this weekend.

Nonetheless, it is an unquestionable declaration of purpose and a resounding demonstration of chairman Doug King’s trust in Lampard, who is obviously eager to make the required investments in an effort to guide Coventry into the play-offs and beyond.

Matt Grimes of Swansea City was found guilty by Coventry City, and the asking price was disclosed.

FLW asked Callum Hands, our resident Sky Blues fan commentator, whether he thinks Grimes would be worth £3.5 million and if the Swansea mainstay would be able to start for Lampard in the face of competition from players like Ben Sheaf, Josh Eccles, Jamie Allen, and Victor Torp.

Swansea’s asking price, according to Callum, is “exceptional value” for Coventry, who he thinks could have one of the best midfield units in the league with Grimes, Sheaf, and cutting-edge midfielder Jack Rudoni.

“Obviously Matt Grimes is someone who has been a mainstay at Swansea for a number of years now, and it’s surprising how he hasn’t gone onto better things given how many times he has been linked with a move away,” Callum said to FLW.

“£3.5 million is a great deal, particularly during a transfer window that is often inflated.

“I’m happy that it seems we’ll be the benefactors of Swansea’s decision to let go of their captain for such a low price at this point in the season, as it’s a position we’ve been clamoring to replace for some time.

“Ben Sheaf has missed a significant portion of the season and hasn’t performed at the level we’ve seen him perform in recent years, even in his cameos.

“Josh Eccles and Jamie Allen, particularly Allen under Lampard in the past few games, have both performed well in covering the gaps left by Sheaf and even Gus Hamer.

“Everyone must earn their position, but in this league, a midfield trio of Grimes, Sheaf, and Jack Rudoni ahead is just tantalizing to consider, so I don’t see him starting anytime soon.

Arguably, it would rank among the division’s greatest.
