Sources: West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday pushing to sign ex-Southampton star

After being released from Southampton, the 32-year-old midfielder signed a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps, an MLS team, only last September.

Before the 2024 MLS season ended in November, Armstrong made 11 appearances for the Canadian team; the next season is scheduled to start the following month.

Years Club Appearances Goals Assists
2010-2015 Dundee United 150 21 5
2015-2018 Celtic 144 28 20
2018-2024 Southampton 214 25 19
2024- Vancouver Whitecaps 11 2 2

Though Armstrong’s five goals and seven assists put the Saints on track to earn promotion through the play-offs, he is most remembered for his time with both Celtic and Southampton. He played in all but four of the latter’s 46 league games in the Championship before a serious injury ended his season.

Both Wednesday and Albion are working extremely hard to conclude a deal for Armstrong this month, according to sources close to FLW. It might be difficult to persuade the Whitecaps to let go of the 51-cap Scotland international because he is a Designated Player in the MLS.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon first expressed interest in Wednesday, but FLW can now disclose that the Owls and West Brom are now the front-runners for his signature.

Nixon recently reported on Patreon that Danny Rohl, the current Wednesday manager and former Southampton first-team coach, had expressed interest in reuniting with Armstrong during the summer but had missed out on a move.

Nixon separately stated last week that Burnley, who are vying for automatic promotion, are interested in Armstrong. However, it appears that both the Owls and the Baggies are currently overtaking Scott Parker’s team in the competition for Armstrong’s services. Given his background and established class, Armstrong could be a wise mid-season addition for teams near the top of the Championship, but if Wednesday keeps working hard and manages to acquire the Scotsman, Rohl may find himself unsure of where to choose him.
