Sky Sports Lawrence Shankland says he will be leaving Hearts

Sky Sports Lawrence Shankland says he will be leaving Hearts.

Lawrence Shankland’s contract with Hearts expires in seven months, with little hope of an extension. He expects to depart Tynecastle Park as a free agent next summer after three years in maroon, two of which were record-breaking goal scoring seasons for the striker. It’s unclear whether he’ll sign a pre-contract agreement with another club before then.

When asked what he ideally wanted to happen in his future, Shankland responded unequivocally. He turned down two contract offers from Hearts earlier this year and has confessed he is content with the fact that this will be his final season in Gorgie. As captain, he remains an important member of the team he will lead against Celtic on Saturday night in the Premiership.

“My contract is coming to an end right now. “I won’t have one at Hearts, so that means you move on,” he added. “That is our current status with the club. That is where we left it. There is no contract on the table. We were pleased to leave that agreement at that point. We both accepted the situation and went on. That’s where it has remained since then. “Regarding the deal, there has been no interaction since. I believe that right now, both the club and I are content with our current situation. In terms of conversations, we’ll proceed and see how the next few months pass. But, more significantly, everyone has been focused on trying to improve things on the pitch. Once that is completed, I believe we can focus on other issues. “Playing on big evenings is why you come to a place like Hearts. That’s why you participate in all of these major games, including Saturday night. Events like that at Tynecastle are always the most enjoyable. Having the opportunity to lead the boys out to these games is certainly fantastic. Never say never in football. If you ask me, that is where the issue stands right now.”

Shankland was valued by Hearts at between £4 million and £5 million after scoring 28 and 31 goals in his first two seasons at Tynecastle. In his third club appearance, he has only scored once in 18 games. Despite his prolific form throughout the first two years, Shankland had no transfer offers during the summer. The athlete was questioned whether this surprised him.

“I don’t know if surprised is the right word,” he told me. “Obviously, when you have successful seasons, the rewards of football may occasionally lead to bigger things. You cannot guarantee that will happen. I believe the most important thing is to keep doing what you’re doing and recreating previous seasons. Of course, we are currently experiencing a more challenging period in our lives.
