Everton’s points deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules has been reduced from 10 to six after appealing against the decision
The legendary Arsenal player Ian Wright believes that Manchester City’s legal dispute with the Premier League has a worrying precedent after Everton’s partially successful appeal against their 10-point deduction.
Everton’s punishment was lowered from ten points to six on Monday, and Sean Dyche’s team is currently five points clear of the relegation zone. The Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) of the Premier League, which stipulate that teams cannot lose more than £105 million over a three-year period, were broken by the Toffees, leading to their punishment.
Everton filed an appeal of their sentence on nine different grounds, all of which had to do with the punishment itself rather than the rule violation that the club had acknowledged after suffering a loss of £124.5 million from 2019 to 2022. Of those nine, two were upheld and seven were removed when the board decided that the independent panel had erred in law.
The current winners, City, are still being looked at for 115 PSR violations that occurred between 2009—the year Sheikh Mansour bought the team—and 2018—the year of their 100-point Premier League campaign. After errors with Edison, Wright is worried about the independent commission’s qualifications and the potential consequences for the city.
Speaking on the Sky Bet-sponsored Stick to Football podcast, the former Arsenal striker said: “Don’t you think, if that’s the case – remember the Premier League made a mistake on two of the charges – if you’ve got people who are doing that job, and they’ve got nine to look over, or whatever it is, and they get them wrong to the point where they’ve got to give points back – what are Manchester City‘s lawyers going to do to people like this?” They will be dancing with them!
“How they could be so wrong about that is absurd. In my opinion, they need to have followed through on their current course of action, which is to say, “Okay, we are fining you, you are going to get 10 points.”
“After that, they [Everton] say, ‘All right, we’re going to file an appeal. Let us know what happens after the appeal, and you make the decision. How will you accomplish it beforehand? since you now find yourself in this awkward circumstance.”
In addition, Everton is scheduled to have a second disciplinary hearing for additional infractions; the hearing is scheduled for Monday, April 8.
