Wayne Rooney makes fresh Everton and Manchester United manager admission live on BBC Sport.

Wayne Rooney harbours fantasies of managing Everton and Manchester United in the future he revealed live on BBC Sport.

The former Toffees ace was ousted by Birmingham City after just 15 games in command on January 3 (Sky Sports) and has also had periods with Derby County and DC United.

Despite his unsuccessful tenure at St Andrews, the former England captain and ex-Goodison Park hero, has not been put off stepping back in the dugout and has long-term hopes to coach Everton.

Speaking live on BBC Sport’s coverage of United’s FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest, Rooney responded when Gary Lineker claimed Everton and United should be the target.

“That’s the aim, that’s where I want to get to,” he stated in statements cited by the Metro (28 February).

“Obviously United or Everton, these big jobs. You want to attempt and do them. It’s a process and I’ve had to go through the steps of getting back on track, back into management and in the next 10 years I’m in a position where I can go into one of the big jobs.”

Rooney did a really admirable job in charge at Derby in incredibly challenging financial conditions at the time at Pride Park but his stay at DC was not exactly spectacular.

Then he went to Birmingham to replace a popular figure in John Eustace at a time when the squad were in the playoffs but they fell down the Championship table with Man Utd’s all-time leading striker in charge.

The point is, though, he is still very young in terms of his management career. So, is he going to be in charge at Goodison Park anytime soon? No, that is not likely let’s be honest.

Long term, though? Well, it really is a matter of never say never. If Rooney can get back into management and learn from any past mistakes and prove he has what it takes to thrive in the dugout then one day maybe he will return to the club.
