‘Other options’: Regis Le Bris defends tactical change vs Plymouth, Sunderland ace needs ‘more time’ to adjust

Given Plymouth’s predicament this season, many had anticipated that Sunderland would demolish the city on Saturday afternoon. Sunderland was predicted to win the match, but the Black Cats had to share a point in a 2-2 draw after a late goal from Plymouth tied the score. Regis Le Bris has been experimenting with a number of aspects of his team, including tactical form and player choices, and one of his experiments on Saturday might not have gone as planned.

Dan Neil can return to his peak in a position involving forward midfield.

Le Bris expressed his disappointment at the Black Cats’ lack of opportunities and acknowledged that his team was “lucky” to win the game. Even if it wasn’t as successful as anticipated on Saturday, Le Bris is adamant that the midfield lineup and the choice to start Dan Neil higher up the field with Salis Abdul Samed deeper behind him will eventually succeed.

“It has been Dan’s primary position in the past,” Le Bris stated in an interview with the Northern Echo. Even so, it will likely take him a little longer to get used to this right-hand triangle. But it’s more than simply one game. Although we were let down, we must strengthen for the remaining games of the season. We shall benefit from the experience at the conclusion of the season. The Sunderland boss continued by talking about the roles of Jobe Bellingham and Enzo Le Fee in that crowded midfield and implied that having so many options can only be advantageous. “Enzo and Salis are two [other] players who can contribute to the team.” We are developing alternative methods to handle all the various situations we may encounter because Jobe also played higher up the pitch. We will be a more cohesive team if we have additional possibilities.
