Rangers: David Edgar rages as ‘disgraceful’ footage emerges from win v Kilmarnock

Rangers: David Edgar rages after ‘disgraceful’ film emerges following win at Kilmarnock.

Rangers were denied a “stonewall penalty” after a “disgraceful” call during their Scottish Premiership triumph against Kilmarnock, according to David Edgar.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues maintained their lead at the top of the Premiership table with a 2-1 win at Rugby Park on Wednesday (28 February) due to second-half goals from James Tavernier and Tom Lawrence.

However, Heart and Hand podcast host Edgar was left outraged after the full-time whistle when evidence emerged that showed Lewis Mayo handling the ball in the penalty area in added time, which was strangely missed by the referee and VAR.

Writing on X on Wednesday (28 February) he said: “Stonewall penalty and for VAR to look at that and claim it’s not a penalty is disgraceful.”

Did Rangers get a penalty in their win over Kilmarnock?

The penalty to Rangers issue has dominated Scottish football far too much over the last few years and Wednesday night’s encounter was just the latest in a long line of examples that indicate the Gers don’t get preferential treatment from referees.

Mayo definitely makes contact with the ball with an outstretched arm that likely stops Cyriel Dessers from increasing to the Light Blues’ lead in injury time, but strangely both the VAR and the referee entirely missed that moment.

While one goal may not have made a tremendous difference on the night, it may be important in the Premiership title fight this season. The duel between Rangers and Celtic is expected to go down to the wire and may even come down to goal difference in May.

Hopefully, this moment won’t come back to bother the Gers and Clement in the long run, but Edgar and other pundits’ criticisms are well merited given the clarity of the situation.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has delivered a new title verdict out of Ibrox in a brand new Celtic admission.
