When Sheffield United visits Derby County next, they will be eager to make up for their unexpected 3-0 loss to Hull City.
The Blades had won their previous three Championship games prior to that heartbreaking defeat, but the Tigers’ surprise mayhem at Bramall Lane will have damaged their confidence a little.
With additional new acquisitions apparently in the works, including a contract for this Brazilian midfielder, Chris Wilder will want to see the new players he has acquired—Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon—perform well at Pride Park as part of their new squad.
A Brazilian star is of interest to Sheffield United.
According to a recent Sunday Mirror report, which the Sheffield sensation has also reported, the Blades are hoping to sign midfield sensation Danilo Barbosa this transfer season. His present employers, Botafago, are planning to let go of Barbosa in order to profit from him before his contract expires.
The Championship promotion chasers aren’t the only team eager on signing the 28-year-old, however, as both Leeds United and Everton are cited as additional parties looking at the 6-foot holding midfielder who may be sold for as little as £2m before February’s early deadline.
There may be a new core to Wilder’s team as the holding midfield roles are redesigned, as United is allegedly also interested in signing Hamza Choudhury. A loan transfer for the Leicester City reserve player to travel to South Yorkshire appears increasingly likely.
Barbosa’s potential contributions at Sheffield United
With Ollie Arblaster out with a major injury, Wilder’s holding midfield spots aren’t exactly blessed with significant depth right now, so there would be a method to his madness.
Harrison Burrows, who had spent the majority of the season playing as an option down the left flank, was brought in to serve as an anchor for his club during the Hull loss, and academy product Sydie Peck had to share the limelight with Burrows.
Barbosa, a 28-year-old traveler who would love the chance to succeed in England, would provide Wilder with a new body away from having to rely on players like Peck and Burrows to shine.
In addition to proving himself as an attritional figure centrally, Barbosa has demonstrated his ability to be composed on the ball and a goal threat thus far this season for Botafago. If the former Braga player were to join the Blades ranks shortly with Choudhury, they may create a formidable tandem.
According to the table above, Barbosa outperforms Choudhury in terms of attacking productivity during the 27-year-old’s final season in the second division at Watford, when he contributed four goals while Choudhury contributed almost none.
However, Choudhury’s strengths as a defensive player more than make up for his offensive shortcomings, as he averages more interceptions, tackles, and duels than his possible new Brazilian teammates.
As more and more players are predicted to join the expanding team, pairing him with a fresh face in the English game might also be very beneficial for Barbosa.
