MONDAY MARDLE: “We want it all … and we want it now!”

Someone recently bought me a gift. It took me straight back to my youth and reminded me how life back then was a direct contrast to today and how that has been reflected in the last week or so among City fans.

The gift was a Spectrum.

For those unfamiliar, this is a reproduction of the old ZX Spectrum computer from the 1980s. Same size. Same weight. Same rubber keyboard. Yes, the computer equivalent of a car ‘resto-mod’ in that it uses modern components but, to all intents and purposes, it behaves like the ‘rubber keyed wonder’ from my childhood.

I bought my ZX Spectrum in 1983 from BB Adams on Guildhall Hill. It cost the princely sum of £125 – the 48K version was £175.  I had saved every penny that came into my possession for a year to buy it – birthday money, Christmas money, pocket money and money I earned cutting lawns.

Just after my birthday, my parents acknowledged my efforts by adding the last £20, allowing me to finally purchase one.

Now compare that to the present. How frequently do you hear about people setting money aside for anything? They want it now! iPhone 16? Yes, please, on a contract for £70 per month. The newest vehicle? I’ll get it on a PCP now. A widget, perhaps? I’ll order it from Amazon for delivery the following day.

No one is interested in waiting. They anticipate immediate satisfaction.

What the heck?
