Carlos Corberan makes clear what annoyed him as West Brom frustration continues

Coach Carlos Corberan was disappointed despite West Brom overcoming their goal drought at The Hawthorns with a 2-2 draw against Norwich City.

Mason Holgate and Josh Maja scored twice for the Baggies in the first half, but they were only able to share the spoils thanks to Emiliano Marcondes’ attempt and a Torbjorn Heggem own goal.

Despite scoring for the first time in five home games, Corberan was dissatisfied with the way his team defended. He claimed: “The team has taken a positive step in attack but at the same time we have suffered more chances and [conceded] goals than we want to suffer in the first half.”I noticed development in offense, but there were also game scenarios when we did not perform well in defense. For me, we could have done better with the two goals and some of the opportunities we gave them.

“During the first 20 to 25 minutes [of the second half], we continued to create chances without allowing any. We didn’t produce anything in the final minutes and gave up a few more chances.”

Corberan explained the triple substitution he made in the 70th minute, saying: “We were hoping for more from [everyone] as a team, not just the bench. The players who came to the bench need to give more.

“The guys who were on the field at the time must continue to give more. As a coach, I must continue to look for solutions in the game to see how we can do more.

Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup acknowledged that his team needed to improve after conceding 11 goals in their last five games, but he was relieved to see them back in the scoring zone.

He stated, “We should not concede as many goals as we do now. That is definitely something we should improve and work on.

“But it’s always nice to have that confidence as a coach that when I see the players out there today, I believe we can score throughout the 90 minutes, which is critical.

“So I’m pleased with the amount of chances we created, I’m pleased with the goals we scored.”

The Canaries conceded just minutes after taking the lead in the 41st minute, which Thorup stated they need to improve on.

He went on to say, “Of course, having a one-goal lead at halftime would have been ideal in the last minutes.

“To be honest, we’ve seen this happen before this season when we concede after scoring a goal.” So it is something we have been aware of, but we clearly need to be more conscious of.”

Onel Hernandez made his long-awaited comeback from injury as a substitute in the 64th minute, with the returning Liam Gibbs, and Thorup expressed his excitement at having the pair back.

He stated, “[Having them back] changes the picture for us.”

“When we make replacements, we don’t weaken the team; instead, we may bring in great players. I also believe Gibbs performed well when he came on.
