Ivan Juric, the manager of Southampton, responded after his team lost 3-1 to Newcastle United, led by Eddie
Howe.
Bednarek was unmarked and making his way home past Dubravka after United dominated the first ten minutes.
Newcastle maintained their composure and rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the 51st minute, then dominated the
remainder of the game in third gear.
Ivan Juric has decided to hold the match officials accountable for the loss, even though Newcastle United deserved
to win and was well worth the two-goal margin.
The Southampton boss declaring; “The penalty for Newcastle I don’t accept because it wasn’t a penalty. This is a
crucial moment…There were some crucial moments, like the penalty and other situations that go to Newcastle’s
side.”
The truth is, the only controversy on the Newcastle United penalty, was how on earth the referee didn’t instantly
give it. It was such a clear spot-kick, as Aribo fouled Isak from behind, without touching the ball, just as the striker
was about to shoot/score.
As for ‘other situations’, I guess Ivan Juric is talking about the disallowed late ‘goal’, the TV replays showed that
the Southampton player was offside and that is VAR working perfectly, as was always intended. The only
complaint with both the penalty and the offside, is how long VAR takes to make the decisions. The key and most
important thing though, is that both times the on the pitch match officials were saved by the technology from
wrong decisions that could have impacted the result. That is the truth, no matter what Ivan Juric claims.
Southampton boss Ivan Juric talking after Newcastle United’s 3-1 win at St Mary’s:
Because we moved the ball and applied good pressure, we scored a goal, and it was a great moment in this
scenario.
“The Newcastle penalty Since there wasn’t a punishment, I don’t accept.
“This is an important time.
From the bench, I had a very clear idea.
Isak was against Joe Aribo. For me, it’s the incorrect choice.
“I believed that my players were fighting and giving it their all.
“They put up a good fight, but it was insufficient.
The penalty and other circumstances that went Newcastle’s way were among the pivotal moments.
“I’m not dissatisfied with my team’s performance today, but I am disappointed with the outcome.
“They have to continue like this, working on the training like this.
“I don’t have many bad things to say to my boys today.
“They gave it their all, but there are some technical things they could have done better.”
