Ferguson wowed as Rangers could seal permanent transfer of ‘Magic’ star within months

Rangers: Permanent transfer for ‘Magic’ Oscar Cortes on cards at Ibrox.

Derek Ferguson has predicted that Rangers will finalize the permanent signing of Oscar Cortes this summer.

During the January transfer window, the 20-year-old Colombian winger joined on loan from Ligue 1 team Lens, with a buyout option (official website, 1 February).

Cortes, who has so far made six appearances across all competitions, scored his first goal for the team on Saturday, January 24, in the Scottish Premiership’s 5-0 defeat of Hearts.

Speaking only to Ibrox News, former Rangers player Ferguson expressed his admiration for Cortes’ contributions to the team and expressed a desire for him to stay on longer.

Ferguson said, “Oh aye, I’d like to see him of course,” when asked if he expected Rangers to make a permanent move and if he would like to see that.

The thing I enjoy about Cortes is that, occasionally, I see a player’s fearlessness or hunger since, generally speaking, we don’t identify such qualities with widemen or players who plan forward.

“He doesn’t hesitate to put his head and himself out there. Even though he’s not the biggest boy in the world, it’s obvious that he enjoys chasing after balls.

As a spectator, I find it fascinating that he always tries to get ahead. However, I really like that. I watched him get into a box and get between the sticks in a few games when there were balls maybe off to the wide right, and he didn’t hesitate to put his head where it hurt.

After taking a few knocks, he stood up and picked himself up. Playing Scottish football can occasionally be a bit rough and tumble, so I think that’s sort of crucial.

“Yet, he has many positive qualities, and it would be ideal if he could be a consistent member of that team.”

Will Oscar Cortes be fully transferred to the Rangers?

Rangers supporters were bracing themselves for the worst after Abdullah Sima sustained a permanent injury while traveling with Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, Philippe Clement moved swiftly to add Cortes to make up for the departure of the Brighton winger who was on loan, and thus far, he appears to be a true find.

In addition, Rangers included an option-to-buy provision, which you can presume they wouldn’t have included if they didn’t need to budget for a full transfer.

To be honest, there is no reason to believe Cortes won’t sign a long-term deal if he keeps up his current level of performance in Glasgow.
