Complicated Sheffield United transfer battle takes another twist as target takes unusual step
Jonjoe Kenny may miss Hertha Berlin’s Bundesliga 2 match against Hamburg this evening, according to The Star, as he prepares to join Sheffield United later this month. The former Everton player has been identified as a potential solution to Chris Wilder’s need for a right-back before the transfer market closes in early February.
Kenny took the rare step of recording an interview with Sky in Germany last week, explaining why he wants to return to England with the Blades. The 27-year-old’s contract at Olympiastadion Berlin expires in the summer, and United are looking for a cheap transfer to assist their Premier League promotion campaign.
However, negotiations have not gone as smoothly as they or Kenny would like, and his projected absence from the team to face Hamburg – unless there is a last-minute change of plans – would be yet another twist in the transfer war. United’s sole current option at right-back is Chelsea centre-back Alfie Gilchrist, with Femi Seriki only recently returning from injury and missing last night’s Bramall Lane encounter with Hull City entirely.
“Yes, Sheffield [United] wants to sign me right away, and I want to take this step as well,” Kenny stated earlier this week. “I adore Hertha BSC and owe the club a tremendous deal. I made the right decision at the time and am committed to the club’s prosperity to this day.My partner and I became parents a few years ago, and a lot has changed for us off the pitch. I sincerely want to take this opportunity for my family and return to our home nation together. [United] have offered me this choice, and I genuinely hope that the clubs can achieve a deal, allowing me to depart Berlin with enormous thanks and on good terms.”
