Andy Farrell speaks on out replacing Steve Borthwick and wife ‘going through hell’

Andy Farrell was a guest on the Late Late Show on Friday evening just a couple of weeks on from guiding Ireland to a second consecutive Six Nations title

Andy Farrell, Ireland’s renowned rugby coach, couldn’t help but draw riotous laughter from the audience on the Late Late Show with a short response to questions about potentially coaching England.

Comic Patrick Kielty compared Farrell’s reputation in Ireland to that of Jack Charlton, citing his achievement in leading the country to back-to-back Six Nations victories, which earned him the warm title of honorary Irishman despite his English heritage.

Kielty inquired about Farrell’s desire to coach his motherland, given his eight England caps.

However, he responded with a booming “No,” causing the studio to erupt in laughter and applause.
The British and Irish Lions Coach remained unconcerned, stating that doing one’s best job regardless of location leads to positive outcomes.I’ve never asked to be a team captain or head coach; people ask you because of your work, and you take it in stride and make decisions as you go.”

Furthermore, Farrell discussed his unusual experience coaching against his son Owen during England matches, characterizing it as’very easy’.

“I know that sounds sadistic in a way, but it was very easy because I know for a fact he would do anything to beat me, so why wouldn’t I do it to beat him as well?”

He reflected on their working relationship during Owen’s early years at Saracens. “I coached him as a junior at Saracens, and it was professional.

“When it’s your job and obligation, you just do it. It’s harder for everyone else in the family, but for us, it’s all about the work at hand and giving your best for your team.”

Farrell discussed the family dynamics at play when he and his son compete, noting the difficult position it puts his wife Coleen in.

“Isn’t that the hardest job? She must go through hell; someone is overjoyed, and someone is depressed, therefore I guess she has to wear two hats.”
