Fast-starting Cambridge hold off Mansfield fightback to end winless run
Quick-starting Cambridge ends their winless streak by thwarting Mansfield’s comeback.
After 48 seconds, Michael Morrison gave the U’s the lead, and Josh Stokes promptly scored a second from the penalty spot.
Shortly after halftime, Ryan Loft put the home team ahead 3-0, but goals from replacements George Maris and Lee Gregory forced them to work hard for their first victory since December 7.
The first-minute goal was the second for the U’s and the third in nine league games for Cambridge.
It happened when captain Morrison turned home a shot that Stokes had fired across goal.
Six minutes later, Stokes scored from the penalty spot after Alfie Kilgour had pulled him down in the box.
Two minutes into the second half, Loft received a corner and scored his first U’s goal to give Cambridge their third.
In the 61st minute, Maris, playing against his former team, put the Stags back in the game by shooting past substitute goalie Jack Stevens from a corner.
But Mansfield had to wait until stoppage time for their second goal.
Zeno Ibsen Rossi fouled Ben Waine, allowing Gregory to score from the spot, but Cambridge held on.
