Ian Wright has pushed Gareth Southgate to feature the Everton defender in the friendlies that take place next month in addition to calling up Jarrad Branthwaite.
Everton’s standout back this season, Branthwaite, has been highly tipped for his first senior international cap.
In recent weeks, the young player has been linked to teams like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and even Liverpool.
And Wright says Southgate should answer questions if he does not play in the Three Lions’ next friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
On his Wrighty’s House podcast [25 February, 48 minutes and 48 seconds], the former Arsenal striker declared, “I want to give Jarrad Branthwaite flowers.”
He has it all, so I think he’ll be in the next England team. Observe his style of play; he is left-handed and plays with all the necessary skills.
“Then, he sounds like someone who is already ‘here’ when you listen to his post-game interview.
“He should be called up because he looks like a fit player for England. He ought to be playing as well as called up.
As we approach the Euros, it is imperative that he plays and gains confidence. We are dealing with a monster, I assure you. Something monstrous.
“People ought to speak up about it if it doesn’t happen.”
Jarrad Branthwaite’s transfer dilemma could affect Everton.
Branthwaite is showing to have the true potential that Everton supporters have long suspected he had.
His fame will only grow if he gets called up for England’s upcoming round of matches, as the entire world is now aware of it.
Given that many people will be watching Everton, it is debatable whether or not that is a good thing for him.
It goes without saying that Branthwaite will move on if the Toffees are demoted this season.
But if they stay up, the club won’t be willing to consider making a big offer to cash in on a player who had recently signed a new contract.
It’s an unfortunate fact that players with elite potential will eventually be scooped up, much like with John Stones.
All we can do is hope that Everton gets to use him for a few more years before that happens.
