Steven Gerrard Rangers success cited in Liverpool manager audition as Yossi Benayoun urges Anfield club to move

Steven Gerrard Rangers success touted in Liverpool manager audition as Yossi Benayoun begs Anfield club to transfer.

Steven Gerrard’s achievements at Rangers should have him in serious contention for the Liverpool position in the summer.

That’s the assessment of the Englishman’s former Reds teammate Yossi Benayoun. The Israeli, 43, feels the Anfield squad must keep their character when Jurgen Klopp departs the club at the end of the season and nobody would embody that as much than his former skipper.

Gerrard has suffered in management since quitting Ibrox at both Aston Villa and again at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi, but his achievements at Ibrox should be taken into consideration by the Premier League giants’ boardroom as, in Glasgow, he has demonstrated he can win with a major club with substantial demands.

“If they can add someone like Xabi [Alonso], or perhaps this would be a surprise, someone like Steven Gerrard, one of them will continue what Klopp has established because they know the club. Xabi is a dear friend of mine and I can see why people are speaking about him as a Liverpool manager.

“It didn’t work well at Aston Villa for Stevie but he did a terrific job at Rangers. He deserves a chance to be coach at Liverpool for everything he done in his career. If they bring in the right person, Liverpool can build on the steadiness of Klopp over the last nine years.

“Not to alter 35 players and everyone leaving. OK, some players may go but top players will always want to come to Liverpool. Now they are battling for trophies and Klopp is the key man but it’s a large club, they have the infrastructure and conditions to continue being a major club.”
